This is a challenging, adventurous coastal hike known for its steep climbs, rocky terrain, and beautiful ocean views. It involves ascending and descending Mount Johnston, crossing a sandbar to Ap Lei Pai, and exploring the island to the lighthouse.
Starting Point:
Begin at Lei Tung MTR station, Exit B, and head towards the back of Mount Johnston, following a path behind a bus shelter.
Mount Johnston Ascent:
The initial ascent is steep, with steps and ropes to aid hikers. There are warning signs due to the steepness and potential hazards.
Descent to Sandbar:
The trail then descends towards the sandbar connecting Ap Lei Chau and Ap Lei Pai, using ropes for support.
Ap Lei Pai Exploration:
Cross the sandbar and hike across Ap Lei Pai to reach the Mount Johnston Lighthouse at the southern tip.
Return Journey:
The return journey can be made via the same route or by arranging a sampan (small boat) ride back to Aberdeen.
Key features and considerations:
Difficulty:
This hike is considered intermediate to advanced due to the steepness, loose rocks, and need for good balance.
Safety:
Be prepared for challenging terrain and potentially slippery conditions, especially when descending. Bring gloves to protect your hands from rope burn, and be cautious of the loose rocks.
Gear:
Wear appropriate hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and consider using gloves for rope sections.
Views:
The hike offers stunning panoramic views of the coastline, Lamma Island, Aberdeen, and Ocean Park.
Summer Hike:
Be aware that the hike is mostly exposed, with little shade, so it can get very hot in the summer.
Alternative Return:
A sampan ride back from Ap Lei Pai to Aberdeen is a great option, especially after a challenging hike.
